BOUNCE BACK

The Manchester United and England international striker Wayne Rooney has said that he will bounce back from his disappointing performance against Swansea during the weekend. Manchester United could only manage a 1-1 draw with Swansea during the weekend, which resulted in their lead at the top of the table cut to just four points. This draw was extremely frustrating for Sir Alex Ferguson especially given that United had a number of opportunities to win the match in the second half. Wayne Rooney was especially guilty of wasting a number of good openings created by the other players.

This led to the former Newcastle United striker an insurer labelling his performance as one of his worst ever. The 27-year-old, though, has said that he intends to put behind the bad performance against Swansea when the club will be facing Newcastle on Boxing Day. This is one of the tough fixtures for United during the Christmas period despite the fact that Newcastle are struggling for form. Rooney has said that he could not feel his poor performance on the pitch, but has promised to improve in the next match. Rooney was substituted after the hour mark, with a poor freekick by his final involvement in the game.

“I could feel it on the pitch that things weren’t right at Swansea. Some days you have an off day I could feel that and I couldn’t complain at being substituted. But the good thing I think about football, and especially over the Christmas period, is that you have lots of games and the Swansea game has gone for me and it is certainly not one I will remember. I will relish the next one, though,” said Rooney. The England international has largely been overshadowed by Robin van Persie this season. He has scored just seven league goals so far this season.

CITY IS CRUNCH MATCH

The Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that the match against Manchester City during the weekend will be an extremely crucial one in the course of the title race. Manchester United will be coming up against their arch rivals Manchester City against whom they suffered a 6-1 defeat at this stage last season. This time around, they come into the match with the opportunity to extend their lead to 6 points ahead of City, which will be a major boost ahead of the Christmas fixture list. United come into the match on the back of a good run of form, but Rooney has said that the players need to be completely focused in order to achieve the right result.

Rooney has said that people should not forget how Chelsea were top of the table after just nine matches and having a six-point advantage over United at the top of the table. However, they have now fallen 10 points behind the Manchester club. Such a situation could happen to anyone if players start to relax and take things easy. Rooney has an excellent record of scoring in the Manchester derby and he will be looking to continue the same on Sunday as well. He has been criticised recently for not scoring as many goals as the star man Robin van Persie.

“It looks like it is starting to go that way but this is a crazy league and anything can happen. It’s a massive game on Sunday and it was nice to get the win at Reading – we can go into the game knowing we are three points above City. It gives us that extra belief and confidence to go there and try and get the three points,” said Wayne Rooney. United opened the six-point advantage following their 4-3 win over Reading.

20TH TITLE AWAITS

The Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has claimed that the former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie is such a good attacking talent that he will be able to lead Manchester United to the 20th Premier league title this season. The Dutchman was signed from Arsenal £24 million in the summer and he has already made a huge impact on the club’s fortunes this season. So far, he has scored 11 goals in just 14 matches for the club in all competitions. He has been able to outshine Wayne Rooney, who has been at the club for almost 10 years.

Now, the England international has said that he is confident that the Dutchman will be able to get Manchester United to the record 20th Premier league title, which would also knock Manchester city off their perch. Robin van Persie has been extremely prolific for Manchester United in the Champions League and the Premier league. He once again helped United get a comeback victory against Braga in the Champions league, which almost sealed their passage into the knockout stages. Speaking after the match, Rooney said that van Persie has made almost an immediate impact at the club and is hoping that it continues for the rest of the season.

“I think he’s great for the whole team – he’s our talisman. Everyone knows he’s a fantastic player. He’s obviously a great finisher but he has a calmness about him, holds the ball up well and brings players into play. If you can get players around him and feeding off him, it’s great for us all. When you look at all the teams who have won this competition, they’ve all had those individuals who can do a bit of magic and win the competition,” said Wayne Rooney. Rooney scored from the penalty spot against Braga.

ROONEY RULED OUT

The manager of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson, has said that Wayne Rooney will not feature in the match against Liverpool which is going to be played at Anfield on Sunday. Rooney has been out of action since the last 25 days. He had injured himself in United’s second match of the season against Fulham. There have been speculations that the English striker might play for United against Liverpool, but, Ferguson has denied all those reports.

As per Ferguson, it’s true that Rooney is recovering well and he will be back soon. But, he will not play against Liverpool. He is a very important player for the team and the team management doesn’t want him to play with 95% fitness. He will play only when he will get fully fit and the way he is recovering, he will probably make a comeback next week.

Rooney was included in the first XI in United’s first game of the season against Everton, but, in the next game against Fulham, he didn’t manage to find a place in the starting line up and the new signing, Robin Van Persie, was preferred ahead of him. Rooney substituted Shinji Kagawa in the second half of the match, but, he had a nasty collision with Hugo Rodallega. The injury was so bad that he couldn’t even walk off the park. He was carried out of the ground on a stretcher. It seemed that it would take Rooney quite a few days to recover, but, the English superstar has made a speedy recovery.

As per Ferguson, it will be good to have Rooney back in the team. He is a great player and a true match winner. If he gets 100% fit, he would definitely get starting chances more often than not.
